Resources at the Library
- Reference Desk
The librarians at the reference desk can help you locate resources in your job search.
- Career Collection
- Career and Job related books arranged by category
- Categories are: General Career Guidance, Interviewing, Cover Letters, Resumes, Specific Jobs and Careers, Career and Job Examinations
Books are located in the first floor reference area
- Books can be taken home for three weeks and renewed twice.
- Computers
- Use a computer at the library to fill out online applications or conduct your job search
- Desktop computers are available to use for up to one hour in the reference area on a first come, first serve basis. You may walk up to a free computer if available or enter the online waiting list if all are full. Use your library card to log in. Printing is available for 10 cents a page.
- Desktop computers are available to use for up to two hours in the reference area by reservation. Call or come in to the library the day that you would like to reserve. Use your library card to log in and reserve. Printing is available for 10 cents a page.
- Laptop computers are available to use in the library for up to two hours. Access the library wireless network and use Microsoft Office 2007. Use your library card to check one out at the main circulation desk. Printing is not available from the laptops.
- Use your own laptop to access the library wireless network throughout the whole building. Printing is not available for laptops.
- Classes and Workshops
- The library offers, through the generous support of SAHELI, free computer classes. Check event calendar for details.
- The library offers a variety of workshops related to job hunting, including resume help and interviewing skills. Check event calendar for upcoming workshops.

Online Resources for Waltham residents and library patrons
The following are subscription databases that Waltham residents can access from home using their library card. All library visitors can access these in the library at one of our desktop computers.
- Ferguson's Career Guidance Center from Facts on File
Fully searchable and extensively hyperlinked, Ferguson's Career Guidance Center contains in-depth job descriptions complete with job-specific resource listings, detailed industry descriptions, career resources, career preparation information and web resources. The database also includes a searchable archive of articles from Career Opportunities News, a newsletter covering the most recent trends and news in the job market. Users can access information through searches by industry skill, job level, education, or salary range as well as by popular government indexes such as the Dictionary of Occupational Titles.
- Job & Career Accelerator
Job & Career Accelerator combines everything you need for a successful job search into one easy-to-use online application. With this innovative job-hunting system, you can: explore detailed information on over 1,000 different occupations, match your interests and skills with the career that's best for you, search local and national job postings, create professional resumes and cover letters, practice and master interviewing skills, get invaluable tips and advice every step of the way—from your initial search to accepting an offer, and conveniently organize and track your job-search progress all in one place.
- General Business File
General Business File is a research tool for those who are looking to analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. This database includes a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings.
- Vocations and Careers Collection
A variety of articles from periodicals and reference books about navigating your career and looking for a job.
- Learning Express Library
This database contains practice tests for a variety of exams, including the civil service exam. There is also advice for job search and workplace skills. If you are a Waltham resident with a library card, you can create an account from home using your library card number as your username. If you are in the library, you can create an account on any desktop computer in the library, creating a username of your choosing.
- AtoZdatabases
AtoZdatabases is the Premier Reference and Marketing Database including 30 million business profiles & 220 million residents. Search for information about a specific business or browse job listings.
- Reference USA
Reference USA provides access to detailed information on more than 14 million U.S. businesses. Users can search by ticker symbol, company size, and even number of computers.

- Career One Stop
This site, sponsored by the United States Department of Labor, contains resume help, self assessment for job searching, and job ideas. Recently found yourself out of work? Visit the re-employment portal, which includes answers about unemployment benefits and COBRA rights.
- Occupational Information Network (O*NET)
This site, sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration, "provides comprehensive occupational descriptions and data for use by job seekers, workforce development offices, human resources professionals, students, researchers, and others."
- The Riley Guide
This site contains a lot of information regarding searching and preparing for jobs. A lot of clicking is required if you want to search the site, but the amount of information is invaluable, especially for those who are new to using the Internet for job help. Read more about The Riley Guide.
- Job Central
This site, sponsored by DirectEmployers Association, provides several resources, including sample resumes, and education advice. Users can also post a resume, after creating an account.
- Wall Street Journal: Career and Job News
Articles and Blog Postings regarding on job and career related topics.
- Occupational Outlook Handbook
Online version of the United States Department of Labor publication. Includes detailed descriptions of careers.
- Newton Free Library's Career Center
